I don't understand. I know that italic is the correct way to draw attention to specific words, but if oblique is so bad and we're not supposed to use it. Why does it exist anyway????
Oblique is used to make fake italics. Some fonts do not feature an italic typestyle. Therefore, certain programs (I'm looking at you, Microsoft Word) will let you click an "Italic" button and then lean the type forward 15 to 30 degrees. It gives the appearance of being italicized, but it's just oblique type.
